23rd September 1970: Ani DiFranco born
Ani DiFranco’s so bisexual she was even born on International Celebrate Bisexuality Day, September 23rd. The American folk-rocker was one of the great queer icons of the 1990s, on the cover of Diva and Bi Community News alike.
Her rugged independence, still running her own record label to avoid compromise with corporate giants, mirrors the self-organised spirit of much bi activism and organising away from the ‘pink pound’ economy of the gay and lesbian scene.
We spent a while trying to work out when Ani DiFranco came out as bisexual, and though the first obvious lyrical sign is on her second (1991) album, the only conclusion we could reach was she was never ‘in’.
