Make that two UK bi Olympic Winners?

Bronze medal winning Olympic diver Tom Daley has today released a YouTube video where he talks about being in a relationship with a man – and still being attracted to women.

He said: “It did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen.

“But it wasn’t until spring this year that something just clicked. It felt right and I thought ‘Okay’.

“And my whole world changed there and then.” He adds, “Of course I still fancy girls but right now I’m dating a guy and I couldn’t be happier.”

He reflects though that “In an ideal world I wouldn’t be doing this video, and it wouldn’t matter.”

It’s noticeable he doesn’t pick a label. The video isn’t about identity politics, it’s him talking about what and who is making him happy.

Olympic boxer Nicola Adams, who won a gold medal at London 2012, came out as bisexual last year and topped the Independent on Sunday “pink list”.

With the UK winning 65 medals at the 2012 Olympics, and the ONS claiming only 0.4% of the population are bisexual, we were already over-represented in the medal haul. If Tom’s bi, we are now hugely outperforming at Olympic medal-winning!
