Long-running international bisexual web hub site bi.org is to close next month.
The website, which launched on 18th August 1996 as a resource for the bi community worldwide, has since then hosted many email lists and websites.
Many local groups were name-of-town.bi.org and interest groups subject.bi.org. Groups like Manchester’s BiPhoria, MerseyBis, and London Bi Coffee as well as other projects like OffPink books and Bi Community News magazine had bi.org domains.
Bisexual.org launched almost the same day and there was quickly a broad agreement reached between the two that bisexual.org would cover bi resources in the USA and bi.org the rest of the world – comparative levels of online and grassroots organising at the time meaning this was a fairly even split.
In recent years the website has declined in depth and its front page has mostly acted as a signpost to webpages elsewhere such as BCN, Bisexual Index, the American Institute of Bisexuality and the German Bi Network. Some remaining pages such as the Bi Visibility Day website and London Bi Coffee meet’s pages will need to find new homes, but the greater potential loss is in surrendering such a catchy and widely linked / printed domain name.
The site closes on March 13th.
The annual USA bi gathering BECAUSE is almost upon us – this year it’s on the weekend of April 17-19. The conference will be held at the University of Minnesota in the Coffman Memorial Union in Minneapolis, MN.
This year, the BECAUSE Conference theme will be leadership, with the tag line “Developing Leaders to Empower Community.”
Alongside an extensive workshop programme, the conference’s keynote speakers will be Andrea Jenkins and Eliel Cruz.
Andrea Jenkins is an award winning playwright, visual artist, poet, writer, spoken word artist, performer, and Bush Leadership Fellow, who works as a Senior Policy Aide to the 8th Ward Minneapolis City Council Member Elizabeth Glidden. She is a nationally known trans activist in the USA.
Eliel Cruz is a high-profile writer and blogger, and the bi section editor of Advocate.com.
Preregistration for BECAUSE is available online until April 11. Attendees are encouraged to preregister as the conference provides multiple meals and it’s a lot easier to plan this for the organisers if they know how many people are coming – so please, help them out! But rest assured on-the-day registration is also available.
Bi Community News is assembling news of bi-focused events and talks held for this year’s LGBT History Month.
Please do add to the calendar! Also, let @bisexualhistory on twitter know of bi dates to remember.
US President Barack Obama today became the first American premier to use the word “bisexual” in the State Of The Union annual address.
