Take church out of marriage

Simon Hughes MP

Britain’s only out bisexual MP has called for legal and religious marriage to be separated. Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes is to meet equality minister Maria Miller to put the case that only civil officials should be licenced to conduct weddings. Marriages could still take place in churches and other religious venues but would only become legal once separately registered – taking marriage out of the hands of the church. It’s one way of solving the current conundrum on how to implement same-sex marriage while some institutions that can conduct marriages are viciously opposed to the idea.

Kyrsten takes her seat

Kyrsten Sinema

Kyrsten Sinema just became the first openly bisexual member of the USA Congress.

She won her seat in Arizona with a 10,000 vote majority – making her the first out bi member of the House of Representatives. It’s reported that she is also the only openly atheist member – a remarkable statistic from a UK perspective.

Vanessa’s out

US singer Vanessa Carlton came out as bisexual during a performance at Nashville Pride. yesterday. She paused during her set to tell the crowd, “I’ve never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman.”

Coming so soon after Anna Paquin’s decision to come out – is this a co-ordinated bid for bi visibility in the US?
