src=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/fb2e619950c5d7d886294368302fa9de\/tumblr_o4pf9msdxC1qd3j1wo1_500.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I wrote the poem below for MancuniCon, the U.K. Easter sci fi convention. \u00a0I sadly experienced a few racist incidents whilst at this event, as I do most places I go. \u00a0However, when I wrote this poem, I thought about how white science fiction and fantasy is in general, and how the possibility of people of colour inhabiting a fictional space makes so many defensive unless we are subservient to white folks. \u00a0The poem is inspired by my all time fave episode of any Star Trek series, Far Beyond the Stars, on Deep Space Nine.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Jake Sisko<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to be the only black soul in space<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to break through the atmosphere<br \/>I don\u2019t wanna blast off to an unknown place<br \/>I want to stay right here<\/p>\n<p>Cos if black folks board those rocket ships<br \/>Ain\u2019t nothing new it gonna prove<br \/>Cos all they really want us for<br \/>Is to shine those white folks shoes<\/p>\n<p>You may say a brave new world\u2019s waiting<br \/>Where a man can truly be free<br \/>But this black soul be contemplating <br \/>This here world and the racist cruelty I\u2019ve seen<\/p>\n<p>Freedom don\u2019t come beyond the stars<br \/>I won\u2019t find it way up there<br \/>Freedom means stories of my own<br \/>Where black folks sit in the captain\u2019s chair<\/p>\n<p>And ain\u2019t it sweet you imagine aliens<br \/>Being red and blue and green<br \/>But black folks in sci-fi are impossible<br \/>Too unbelievable to be seen<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I choose to write what I do<br \/>Black fantasy is why I\u2019m here<br \/>Far beyond the stars may look good to you<br \/>But
