I love my friends most of the time, but they also manage to piss me off on a regular basis.\u00a0 <\/span>Hence the extended bingo card.\u00a0 <\/span>It is still my major resource to surviving interactions with them with my brain intact. And without being incredibly lonely. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019m going to concentrate on the centre four squares, because I actually have a job, and it ain\u2019t this.\u00a0 <\/span>No further explanations of the outer boxes will be given.\u00a0 <\/span>Please don\u2019t ask. <\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Game of Thrones<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n This show manages to tick every single box of what it is like to be on the outside of popular culture, watching horrified at the world around you.\u00a0 <\/span>It manages to be racist, misogynistic and triggering to survivors of violence and\/or abuse.\u00a0 <\/span>http:\/\/smokeandstir.org\/2013\/06\/22\/game-of-thrones-racism-and-white-saviors\/<\/a>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n So many white geeky\/nerdy folks love this show, and will not shut the hell up about it.\u00a0 <\/span>Dare you complain about any of this, and you will encounter the next square on the bingo card.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n No other black people around<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n You\u2019ll probably notice how alone you are if you try to speak up about anything.\u00a0 <\/span>Not all white folks are racist, but the cluelessness and privelige that many have can leave you flummoxed.\u00a0 <\/span>Get used to explaining why things are hurtful, insulting and racist, because that will be your major contribution, whether you like it or not.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Steampunk<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Or what happened when Goths discovered the colour brown.\u00a0 <\/span>Never mind that steampunk is a fictional concept, it\u2019s a case of history repeating itself and ignoring people of colour.\u00a0 <\/span>Do an internet search of \u201cSteampunk images of people\u201d and try to find more than three people who are black.\u00a0 <\/span>Scroll down a good few pages.\u00a0 <\/span>Go on, I\u2019ll wait for you to come back.\u00a0 <\/span>Not much luck?\u00a0 <\/span>Yeah.\u00a0 <\/span>I thought so.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Racism Apologists<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n I wish this wasn\u2019t on here.\u00a0 <\/span>I wish I didn\u2019t have to encounter this in almost every conversation I have with white geeky\/nerdy white folks.\u00a0 <\/span>But I do.\u00a0 <\/span>Some examples I\u2019ve personally had to grit my teeth through\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cX isn\u2019t racist, it\u2019s artistic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cX isn\u2019t racist, it\u2019s an accurate portrayal of the time period (even if it\u2019s set in the future)<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cX isn\u2019t racist, because Islam isn\u2019t a race.\u201d (seriously, do not get me started on this one)<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cX isn\u2019t racist, because Scottish\/Welsh people get called names too.
