{"id":9100,"date":"2022-03-21T11:48:40","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T11:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uncharted-worlds.org\/blog\/?p=2091"},"modified":"2022-03-21T11:48:40","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T11:48:40","slug":"bisexuality-briefing-for-the-switchboard-volunteers-december-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bimedia.org\/blogs\/2022\/03\/bisexuality-briefing-for-the-switchboard-volunteers-december-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Bisexuality briefing for the Switchboard volunteers, December 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"intro\"><i> 23-minute video briefing about being supportive to bi people. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Back in December 2021, I was hired by <a href=\"https:\/\/switchboard.lgbt\/\">Switchboard LGBT Helpline<\/a> to do a session on the theme of bisexuality, for their volunteers.\u00a0 I did a little presentation, then a Q&amp;A.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re based in London, whereas I was in Nottingham, but due to the wonders of internet communication, that didn&#8217;t matter\u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>They wanted to video the session, for the benefit of volunteers who couldn&#8217;t be there on the day.\u00a0 And I suggested that afterwards, I might share some of it for the benefit of other interested people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The video I&#8217;m putting here today is just the presentation part, about 23 minutes.\u00a0 We\u00a0may yet release some snippets from the Q&amp;A as well &#8211; probably just bits where I&#8217;m answering, not the whole discussion.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bisexuality info for the Switchboard volunteers, 9 December 2021\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/675006720?h=4d1ed7fdcd&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Thoughts on the presentation<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s a stereotype of bisexuality as being strange &amp; exotic &#8211; as if it&#8217;s really different from being lesbian or gay.\u00a0 This stereotype can make it seem as though however much experience you have of being lesbian or gay, you&#8217;re still locked out of the arcane mysteries of bisexuality!\u00a0 And I&#8217;d realised that this can actually be a bit disempowering to lesbian and gay people who want to be supportive to bi people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So the way I decided to structure the info, I talk first about <em>what we have in common<\/em>, before then looking at <em>what the differences are<\/em> between coming out as bi &amp; coming out as gay.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>I also recommend some books, and talk a bit about what it&#8217;s like at bi community events.<\/p>\n<p>This means that to an extent, it&#8217;s specially customised for non-bi people who contribute in places like a Switchboard group or LGBT space.\u00a0 (Not to say it couldn&#8217;t also be interesting\/entertaining to bi people, or indeed straight people.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Techie notes<\/h2>\n<p>The quality isn&#8217;t great, because we recorded it from the &#8220;other end&#8221; of the internet connection!&nbsp; In retrospect, that was arguably a techie mistake:&nbsp; I could have recorded it &#8220;from my end&#8221;, and then we&#8217;d have had a better quality picture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I&#8217;m not totally sure whether Zoom would have let us record just me, at the same time as I had on my screen the &#8220;gallery&#8221; of people I was presenting to.&nbsp; (because I didn&#8217;t want to be presenting just to a view of myself!)&nbsp; One to figure out for another time.<\/p>\n<p>In doing the captions for this, I used a piece of software I hadn&#8217;t tried before:&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikse.dk\/subtitleedit\/\">Subtitle Edit<\/a>.&nbsp; That was the best program I&#8217;ve found so far for that task, and I thoroughly recommend it if you need to do any manual subtitling. <\/p>\n<p>Happy watching!&nbsp; And if you find it useful, please have a think of other places it could usefully be shared&nbsp;\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\nCopyright &copy; Jennifer Moore 2022.
